Usually sequestered in a corner of the basement converted into a pseudo-project studio, Jason can be found plunking away on a piano, guitar, trombone, tweaking knobs, stomping on pedals, punching notes into a computer, or sketching out some new ideas. Like many musicians success is fleeting, and he finds himself asking, "What's the point?"
He has to. Like breathing, it's involuntary.
Having been involved in music for some years, Jason's music career has developed in many areas. In addition to his current work as the Director of International Educational Operations at the world-renown Berklee College of Music, he leads his own group Bending Dogma, the Berklee Bones (the unofficial Berklee Trombone Ensemble) and is the co-founder of the Big Bang Evolutionary Big Band.
He also performs with Carmen Spada's East Meets West, the Mike MacAllister Big Band and with the Berklee College of Music Faculty Jazz Composition Big Band and freelances in the greater Boston area as a trombonist. His original compositions and arrangements have been performed by the Big Bang Evolutionary Big Band (BBEBB) , the Fenway Brass Art Orchestra (FBAO), Phil Wilson's Rainbow Band and Greg Hopkin's Concert Jazz Orchestra.
As a trombonist, Jason has performed at the Panama Jazz Festival, the Clearwater Jazz Festival, The Caramoor Jazz Festival, Vineyard Vibes, the San Jose Jazz Festival and the Jensen Beach, FL Pineapple Festival. He was the co-director for the Fenway Brass Art Orchestra, Assistant Director for Jazz Ensembles at Whitman-Hanson High School, performed with groups such as The Ryles Jazz Orchestra, The Kendrick Oliver Band, The Big and Phat Jazz Orchestra, The Boston Horns Big Band, The Boston University Big Band, Picante Salsa, Impacto Latino, Puerto Rico Latin Sound and at Boston Symphony Hall with Aretha Franklin. Recent recordings include Mike MacAllisters "Finder's Keepers", Christine Fawson's "Happy Talk"' featuring Phil Wilson, Berklee College of Music 60th Anniversary Faculty Composers Series CD and "The Panama Suite" by Danilo Perez now available from Artistshare.
In addition to keeping busy with performing and writing, Jason also spends time doing music notation work using the most current versions of Sibelius and Finale. Be sure to check out "The Music of Hal Crook" and the recently released "Beyond Time and Changes" published by Advance Music. On a side note, Hal and Jason are also completing work on their board game DICE BUSTER® as well managing Hal's official web site halcrook.com!
Always looking for new challenges, Jason is continually developing all aspects of his music. Some recent excursions include learning Pro Tools, incorperating digital effects with trombone (Mike MacAllister Big Band), compositions for chamber settings (Baby Steps), and more abstract pieces (New Life).
